It’s My Party And I’ll Try If I Want To
Today I celebrated my 49th birthday. One year shy of the “Big 5-0.” Ah, whatever. It was a great little birthday with my immediate family who took me to a restaurant that I really like, and got me a great book that I’m going to tear into later tonight (The Death of Bunny Munro, by Nick Cave).
I have a birthday that is in that sort of celebration dead zone that falls just after Christmas and the New Year holiday, so most folks are burned out on celebrations but I’ve never minded. I’m not a big 24-hour party person anymore (though I used to tear up the goth, punk, and new wave clubs in the 80s) and I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions, either. I gave up on the ritual of making them years ago. I fell into the camp that believes that if you’re going to make a promise to yourself and the universe that you’re going to be a better dad, better husband, better person, lose more weight, give more to charity, or whatever your resolution is, you shouldn’t have to wait till new year’s eve to make that promise. Make it to yourself everyday–and more importantly, live it. Or at least try to live it.
This weekend I’m trying something different. To celebrate my birthday I’m giving a huge discount (20%) off of everything in the store for the whole weekend (use discount code happybday2me). Whoa! A big old sales pitch in the middle of such a heartfelt blog? Are you kidding me? You’re not supposed to mix sales pitches with blogs! Why not? Rules were made to be broken. I’m in a great mood and am pretty freaking happy right now and I had a wonderful evening celebrating my birthday with the people I love–why not share the love?
Whatever your New Year brings you, I hope it’s good, and full of love, and I hope you find genuine happiness in whatever you do to celebrate your birthday when it arrives.
I have to go now. I have a delicious home-made birthday cake calling my name…
